Introducing our baby girl…a happy ending
Eighteen months ago we had the heartbreaking news that our baby was stillborn. Six months later I miscarried triplets – it was a devastating time. As a clinical psychologist myself I am well aware of the importance of physical health in maintaining emotional well-being but that had all gone out of the window. Due to a physical health problem associated with the pregnancies (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction [SPD]/Pelvic Girdle Pain [PGP]) which had left me needing to use crutches in pregnancy, I had got out of the routine of exercising regularly and I had put on a lot of weight. I felt angry and out of control with my body for not doing what I wanted it to do (bring a baby safely into this world) which was exacerbated by feeling so out of shape, heavy and sluggish. I needed to take some control back and realised that I was at a bit of a crossroads. I also wanted to set a healthy example to my four-year old daughter – which is when I called BBG.
I spoke to the lovely Chris (Wharton) who invited me to take part in the Summer Shape Off. I was excited by the prospect of it but I wasn’t sure whether I would be physically fit enough as I had to have surgery two weeks before it started. I also wasn’t sure how I’d manage it timewise as, being a working mum, when I wasn’t working in London I was with my daughter. Chris reassured me that it could be tailored to my level of fitness and in terms of my daughter ‘Just bring her with you’ Chris said.
And so I signed up…and I can honestly say that’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I lost 8kg in the 6-week Shape Off and more importantly I felt fitter, stronger and heathier. True to Chris’s words my daughter also loved coming with me to train. She loved hanging out with the legendary Shelley and was very much made to feel like part of the family. After the Shape Off I carried on PT sessions with Sam and several of the group classes. I particularly loved Jimmy and James’s boxercise classes and also Jimmy’s spin classes. I have to say though I’ve been so impressed with how knowledgeable, energetic and dynamic ALL the trainers are – there really is something for everyone and, unlike ever before, I was totally addicted to exercise. I continued to lose weight and got increasingly fitter.
It wasn’t long before I was pregnant again…I was anxious about losing another baby and was worried about doing anything that might place me at risk of that happening again. This was exacerbated by a well-meaning but ill-informed obstetrician who advised me to put my feet up, and ‘forget the spinning and boxercise classes’. Sam was truly amazing and reassured me that carrying on with exercise was actually good for the pregnancy. He was incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate and sensitive about tailoring the PT sessions to my pregnancy needs. James Allen was also a huge source of support and wisdom in advising me how to continue exercising safely in pregnancy and encouraging me to continue his boxercise classes in his safe hands.
And so now, ten months on from joining BBG, I have just given birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl. I am sure it is no coincidence that this has been my healthiest pregnancy so far with no sign of the previous SPD/PGP and no need to be using crutches – in fact I was still doing James’s boxercise classes up until a few weeks before giving birth.
I am so grateful to everyone at BBG but particularly thankful to Chris Wharton for starting me on this journey, and to Sam Austin and James Allen for seeing me healthily and safely through this pregnancy. So for now I’m going to take a few weeks off from training to spend some time with the new addition to our family – but I’ll be back…with some new goals and a very small mascot in tow…
Thanks BBG xxxxx
