If you’re using a weight loss injection like Wegovy or Mounjaro and wondering whether it’s safe to exercise — let me reassure you, not only is it safe, but done right, it’s also essential. That said, there are a few things worth knowing before you jump into a circuit class or head off on a 10k.
These injections work by slowing down digestion and appetite, often leading to a drop in overall energy. That’s not a bad thing, but it means your training needs to be practical and tailored to your current state, not the one you had 10 years ago.
Key Considerations:
- Start slow and steady. A 20-minute walk or a few light resistance exercises is often a better entry point than your favourite 60-minute HIIT session.
- Avoid training fasted, as you may know, I am a fan of fasted low level cardio first thing but when starting on this medication try to get some food in before exercise, just until you gain an understanding of your energy levels. Many people feel lightheaded if they’ve not eaten — especially with slowed digestion.
- Protect your muscle mass. Resistance training is your best pal here — it helps keep your metabolism firing.
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. These injections can blunt thirst and delay digestion — that combination can catch you out mid-workout.
- Most importantly: listen to your body. Don’t push through dizziness or fatigue — adapt your carb intake (I will cover this in the next article)
- At Better Body Group, we build personalised training zones from your easy to complete metabolic tests so you’re not guessing and you get safe and effective exercise guidance whilst on this medication.
Finally, don’t be embarrassed or feel that you are cheating if on this medication. The food companies have been selling engineered addiction creating UPF foods to you for years, if anything they have put you in this situation. If you are going to tell anyone, please please tell your trainer so that they can adapt your program to suit.
As always if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me, I am always happy to help. Jason Jason.crow@betterbodygroup.co.uk
