6 Exercises for Stronger Hamstrings
The hamstrings consist of three muscles, the biceps femoris, semimembranosus and semitendinosus.
The recommendation is to strengthen the muscles within functional movements, in a closed- chain, multi-joint and eccentric (muscle lengthening) contraction.
Here are some exercises to try out:
– SLDL (stiff leg dead lift) double or single leg
– Low step ups with posterior resistance
– Walking lunges
– Resisted sled walking
– Low level plyometrics, such as ankle bounces or low hurdle hops (short ground contact, minimal flexion at the knee are great to improve muscle stiffness and shock absorption strategies)
– Sprinting (this is a common cause for injury, however, a great training tool to improve hamstring strength)
