As a sports scientist, exercise specialist and budding triathlete, it is essential to prepare a programme not only focussed on endurance training and its influence on performance, but to also incorporate a balanced programme of strength training, nutrition, fuelling and recovery alongside. It is all too easy to get caught up in a ‘miles means results’ training protocol, leading to a neglect of other important facets of training that may in turn cause decreased performance, fatigue and even potential illness.
This series of blogs will not only explore endurance training, but will outline the importance of strength training, nutrition, pre-exercise and post-exercise fuelling, and recovery for endurance sport. I will explain how each of these should be incorporated into your training programme to help achieve optimal performance in your training and even at competition level. Any programme you set out on will ultimately need to balance your background, goals and ability to handle different loads, your life situation and stressors, and many other factors. Therefore, the following blogs will set out principles and progressions that will help you optimise your chances of achieving your goal, but will need to be tailored to you. Luckily, that’s just what we specialise in!
