People are now living longer lives, and enjoying their lives more as they age, compared to a century ago. Our fifties are no longer considered old by most people, but in order to be a ‘young’ fifty-something, you need to treat your body right. Staying physically fit in your fifties can be the deciding factor as to whether you enjoy this decade, or spend most days complaining about aches and pains!
The fifties are the time when you start to hear your doctors tell you that common ailments are simply a result of ageing. No one likes to hear that their symptoms are normal signs of getting old, but there is something you can do about it. By staying physically fit, you can counteract a lot of the signs of ageing and even delay many of them from showing up.
Today there are many fifty year olds (and much older people) running marathons, joining local sports teams, and competing on a weekly basis. This is largely because they have taken a wise approach to physical fitness at a period when they find they finally have spare time. This approach will be likely to help keep their bodies healthy so they can live longer – and better.
Of course, since the body does age, and joints and bones become a little more fragile than they used to be, you need to approach fitness differently in your fifties if you are just starting out. For this reason, it is a good idea to talk to one of experienced personal trainers so they can help you develop a workout plan that will safely get you where you want to go.
