Although it’s very easy to place the blame on individuals for their inability to comply with government guidelines regarding health and fitness, there’s an underlying factor that needs to be addressed – a severe lack of suitable exercise facilities across the country. According to sources, those who live in areas with more sporting facilities and a notable higher spend on these facilities are more likely to partake in exercise than those who live in areas where facilities are lacking.

Meeting Recommended Fitness Guidelines

This demonstrates a definite correlation between health and fitness levels and the availability of suitable exercise equipment, resources, and premises. It’s a finding that has been replicated many times, all across the world. In Sweden, for example, those living in close proximity to 4 or more exercise facilities spend 5.4 more minutes per day engaged in moderate exercise than those with access to fewer facilities, and are 69 percent more likely to meet the recommended fitness guidelines. Similarly, in the United States, it has been claimed that a ‘lack of availability of facilities that enable and promote physical activity may, in part, underpin the lower levels of activity observed among populations’.

The Better Body Group is committed to tackling the UK obesity crisis through improving access to beneficial exercise facilities to those all across the country who are struggling to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
