Do you suffer with annoying aches and pains that don’t seem to have any connection to one another or any real reason for being there?
The likelihood is that the majority of your aches and pains are all linked together. The human body is an amazing and complex make up, albeit quite frustrating at times, it can compensate for imbalances without you even knowing. The problem is that this compensation factor can start to affect other surrounding soft tissue and/or skeletal structures, causing pain, aggravation and sometimes even injury elsewhere.
Our super intelligent human minds tell us that when we are feeling aches and pains we should go and see a professional to help alleviate the problem, so, we report discomfort in a specific area. But can we be really sure that the injury or true complaint is where we are actually feeling the pain, or could it all be stemming from somewhere/something else?
Reducing the pain itself is obviously important, however if the focus is solely placed on that one area then you are unlikely to improve your symptoms any time soon. You may experience a decrease in pain for a temporary period but without resolving the root cause of the pain it will simply come straight back again.
“How do we find the root cause of the problem?” I hear you asking, well let me explain!
The joints throughout the human body can be broken down into two classifications, stable joints and mobile joints. Through injury and pain these classifications can vary, meaning a stable joint can become unstable and a mobile joint can become immobile for any number of reasons. When this happens it can create a chain reaction and the joints both above and below the area may also be subject to change. This means that the muscles surrounding an unstable joint will tighten up to protect, likewise, the function and range of movement at an immobile joint will decrease.
In order to assess whether there are any compensatory factors which are the actual root cause of your aches and pains you will need a full body assessment by a professional who can translate the findings and enable you to fully understand what is going on.
Each and every one of you are different and your body will compensate in various ways, come to see one of our Exercise Prescription Specialists at the Better Body Group who will be able to identify the root cause of your aches and pains and give you a clear understanding, not only of what is going on but also on how to improve your symptoms with a mixture of hands on treatment and prescriptive exercise.
WARNING: If you feel that a weekly treatment is the way forward for you then that’s great, however, if you are finding this a necessity over a prolonged period of time then you need to reconsider. Don’t get me wrong, hands on treatment is extremely beneficial in the right scenario and at the right time, but if you find yourself continuously having the same treatment week in week out without any long term improvement then maybe you need to progress onto a slightly different route to recovery.
Think outside the box for a moment, you can re-mobilise and re-stabilise the joints to return to their rightful classification through the right type of exercise, this is something you can control and do on a daily basis. There is more and more research being done into the benefits of safe exercise prescription for various injuries, illnesses and disabilities and it is all positive.
Treatment every week for the rest of your life is not a viable solution, exercise is! Not only will exercise help improve aches and pains but it will also provide you with a number of long term health benefits.
