An age old question, but the first meal of the day is often the most neglected by both adults and children. In previous camps, coaching clinics & nutritional talks with ‘youth athletes’ I have always started the day by asking the question ‘what has everybody had for breakfast?’ And 90% of the time it’s the very highly processed/sugary cereals or ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
My immediate thought turns to ‘so what time are the children going to have the sugar crash or start complaining of hunger pangs or worse, feeling ill? The need to reinforce good nutritional habits, especially with breakfast is crucial from a very young age. So next time the kids reach for the ‘captain crunch, crunchy nut cornflakes’, or even ‘Alpen’ nudge them in the direction of something more nutritious and with a slower energy release. Such as porridge oats (with berries for vitamins, nuts for protein etc), omelettes or any of the recipes that are posted regularly on this page. Also shop smarter look for cereals without added sugar if you can’t live without them and whole wheat bread, non processed meats and lots of fruit.
Thanks and look out for the newly redesigned Youth Athlete Development Program coming soon to The Better Body Group Gyms.
