For today’s blog, I’m going to share this really helpful info-gram I discovered on Massive Health, who have kindly given me permission to reproduce it here. It deals with the struggle we often face when it comes to fats and carbohydrates. Many of us are a little hesitant and fearful around either! So let’s take the opportunity to become a bit more aware of our dietary intake and face the fats!

As you can see from the info-gram, not everything is always as it seems. Whereas we may immediately suspect a plate of bacon and eggs is the weightier choice, it’s the low fat cream cheese bagel that will hinder your weight loss the most.

This is because you digest carbohydrates faster than other nutrients. And as we digest them, our bloodstream becomes flooded with glucose. That signals our body to start producing insulin, and to start storing fat.

With the fats in the bacon and eggs however, our body reacts differently. Fat takes a long time to digest, but eventually breaks down into fatty acids and glycerol. But what we don’t experience is the dramatic blood-glucose and insulin spikes.

Our bodies can deal with the fatty acids much more efficiently, storing, distributing and processing it without adding it to our fat cells. Adds new meaning to the phrase ‘bacon makes everything better’ doesn’t it?!

But before you rush out to order that full English minus the toast, remember fats still have nine calories per gram compared to just four calories per gram of carbohydrate. So, by eating fatty foods, you could reach your daily calorie intake very quickly.

However, as long as we aren’t in a calorie surplus (over your daily calorie intake), fats won’t make us put on the weight we think they will.
